Former Ward 2 Councilman Chokwe Lumumba is recognized as the projected winner of the primary runoff election, according to polling results.
Lumumba beat political newcomer and businessman, Jonathan Lee, by more than 3,000 votes. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Lumumba scored 54 percent of the vote. Lee had 46 percent of the vote.
The two mayoral candidates advanced to Tuesday's runoff elections after earning top numbers in the first primary election (held on May 7), which included 9 other candidates, including incumbent Mayor Harvey Johnson.
Lumumba will now face 3 independent candidates in the general election, which will be held on June 4.
The winner of that election will take office in July.
