WJTV – More high schools will qualify for the state championship basketball tournament under a new bracket format, according to the MHSAA. The 12-day tournament will take place in venues around Jackson, including the Mississippi Coliseum.
The expanded bracket will resemble the NCAA’s famed March Madness system, both with new seeding techniques and single loss elimination. Classes 1A through 4A will each send eight teams, four from the north, four from the south, for a spot in the games. In 5A and 6A, the north and south will send three each.. There will be a consolation game to figure out the third qualifying team. Eighty-four games will be played, ending with one state champion for each class.
