The former adjutant of an American Legion Post 1776 in Cleveland has been indicted on embezzlement charges.
In February, Morgan Shands agreed to repay $370,000 in post money that he had converted to his own use, according to the secretary of state’s office.
The Sun Herald reports Shands and his sister, Rachel Shands Buser, were each indicted in March by a Bolivar County jury for allegedly embezzling $613,834 from the American.
Shands is also charged with conspiracy. Both are free on bond. No trial date has been announced.
The indictment alleges the activities by Shands and Buser occurred between Jan. 1, 2008 and Sept. 7, 2012.
Shands works as a political consultant and was campaign manager for Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes in 2013.
