JACKSON – After just a year away from Jackson, former Lanier boys basketball coach Thomas Billups is back. But this time, he is the head coach at Tougaloo College.
“It’s very special. This is what I wanted all my life, that’s why i won all those state championships at lanier high school, to get to college, Billups said. “I figured if I done all that I deserve a shot at the college level.”
Billups was introduced Monday afternoon as the new head coach, and it wasn’t an ideal road back to Jackson. Almost a year ago to the day, Billups was unceremoniously let go from his job at Lanier, a job he held for over 20 years. In that time he won 8 state titles and over 600 games.
This past season, he coached Oak Grove to a 12-14 record.
