CANTON, Miss. – The trial continues for a man accused of the 2014 stabbing death of a Jackson State University professor.

Melvin Potts was arrested last year in connection with the death of 37-year-old Garrick Shelton. Shelton was found dead last May at his Madison home.

In court Wednesday, several experts took the stand.

The Mississippi State Medical Examiner Dr. Erin Barnhart testified that she performed the autopsy on Shelton May 22, 2014. Shelton’s clothes were stained with blood from several wounds. She said that Shelton had 18 stab wounds on his head and arms. He was also shot in the right shoulder.

Others from the state crime lab testified that Potts’ blood was found in the carport and on the driver side of Shelton’s car.

Potts’ attorneys claim this was self-defense.
