Fire breaks out at Jackson apartment complex

JACKSON, MS – Eight families are pushed out of their homes by an early morning fire.

It happened at North Pointe Village Apartments on Old Canton Road. The fire started around 4:30 Monday morning. Now,about 15 people in eight apartment units are looking for new homes.

This was the scene we arrived this morning. The left side of the building was fully engulfed. Jackson Fire Department Division Chief Cleotha Sanders says at least 3 to 4 units are total losses.

The fire started in an apartment unit where a Jackson police officer lived. His smoke detector alerted him to the fire. That officer and his wife were able to wake up their neighbors and everyone got out safe.

I talked to one of the families effected by the fire. They said say they’ll move into a vacant apartment in the complex and the red cross is helping all the families while they recover. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
But while we were on the scene, we noticed fire fighters taking breaks and drinking water. With temperatures on the rise, Jackson Fire Division Chief Cleotha Sanders says it very important for fire fighters to stay hydrated.

They also have to take turns working near the fire. Sanders says it’s best to have a break after every 10 to 15 minutes.
