MEMA: USGS confirms Madison County earthquake

This is a seismograph image from a sensor in Vicksburg that indicates some shaking in Madison County.

UPDATE: The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said they’ve spoken with experts from the U.S Geological Survey and that they have confirmed that an earthquake did occur in Madison County Monday morning.

The USGS said an earthquake struck four miles southwest of Canton at a preliminary magnitude of 3.2.

Seismologists are still out surveying.

The last earthquake happened in Madison County occurred in May of this year. USGS said then that there was no major fault line in the area, but plates do shift from time to time.

No injuries have been reported at this time.

MADISON COUNTY, Miss. – Madison County Emergency Management officials said experts are out surveying the ground to see if a earthquake hit the area Monday morning.

Several viewers called the WJTV Newsroom saying they felt the ground shaking around 8:23 a.m.

Madison County EOC Director Butch Hammack said they are still trying to determine what happened.
