JACKSON, Miss. – While the Fourth of July is a fun time for families across the nation, the U.S. Coast Guard also wants you to remain safe during the holiday weekend.
The Coast Guard recommends for boaters assess the risks associated with high water and take appropriate precautions.
Here are some tips:
- Always wear a life jacket
- Double-checking all required equipment such as visual and audio distress signals personal flotation devices and a fire extinguisher are present and in working condition.
- Never boat under the influence of alcohol
- Submit a float plan.
While commercial vessel traffic is still open, some locks and dams may experience closures. Mariners should listen for notice to mariners on marine band radio channel 16 for river restrictions and closure updates.
