Jackson may buy equipment to demolish dilapidated houses

JACKSON, Miss. –  Jackson City Council members are looking into buying equipment to demolish abandoned homes, rather than hiring contractors.

They say this might be a more efficient way to get rid of them.

Council President De’Keither Stamps said contractors rent equipment, and the city could do that, too. Councilman Tyrone Hendrix says he’s tired of people calling him about dilapidated housing, and thinks the council should look at the cost of buying equipment.

Jackson officials have said about 50 run-down houses are demolished a year. Hendrix says Meridian and some other cities demolish more than 1,200 homes a year.

Public Works Director Kishia Powell said the city would need three pieces of equipment to demolish houses. She says her department will report back to the council.
