Rally held at State Capitol in support of Mississippi’s flag

JACKSON, Miss. – Dozens showed up at the State Capitol Monday morning to show their support for Mississippi’s flag.

Speakers lined up to voice their opinions.

state flag rally 2Some said it’s a Christian symbol. Others say it’s part of Southern culture and getting rid of it is an attack on their Southern heritage.

The debate over the flag started following the shooting and killing of nine people at a historically black church in Charleston, South Carolina.

The shooter, Dylann Roof, has been seen in pictures posing with the confederate battle flag. Supporters said they shouldn’t be compared to Roof.

“I view the attack on our flag as a cultural attack,” Chad Scott, organizer. “I also think what the media says the flag stands for and what the people believe it stands for are two different things.”

Others oppose.

“I’m Southern,” said Kwame Kenyatta, who is against the Confederate emblem. “But this is not about apple pie and southern hospitality. They’re not waving American flags. You see more Confederate flags than state of Mississippi. ”
