(MEDIA GENERAL) – New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul suffered a severe injury to his hand while lighting off fireworks Saturday, July 4, 2015.

According to multiple reports, the star football player suffered burns to his hand, but he did not lose any fingers. Jordan Raanan, of NJ.com, said doctors are concerned of possible nerve damage to Pierre-Paul’s hand, but said the injury is not “career threatening.”

Despite the severity of the injury, the former All-Pro faces a murky future. Pierre-Paul was designated as the Giants’ franchise player this offseason, and was set to make more than $14 million this season. However, in a negotiation tactic, Pierre-Paul had yet to sign the contract. The Giants could rescind the offer and make Pierre-Paul an unrestricted free agent.
