HAYWARD, California (KRON) — An officer was killed in an early Wednesday morning shootout following a traffic stop in Hayward, California according to KRON 4 sources.
Two Hayward police officers pulled over a vehicle at about 3:15 a.m. near the intersection of Myrtle and Lion Streets. Details surrounding the traffic stop are unknown at this time.
Witnesses told KRON 4 News that they heard screeching in the area of the incident before hearing gun shots. They said that one of the officers was shot in the back.
According to police, the officer was a newly appointed Sergeant.
Several law enforcement agencies, Alameda County Sheriff’s Department, Hayward Police and the California Highway Patrol are on scene investigating the incident.
Video made available to KRON 4 shows an ambulance and emergency crews working on the victim, which is confirmed to be the officer.
Oakland police are investigating a bullet-ridden truck that may be related to the incident.
A suspect was arrested after checking into a hospital with a gunshot wound.
Officers from numerous departments have arrived to pay their respects at Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where the slain officer was taken.
Police Lieutenant Eric Krimm says the investigation is ongoing.
