NEW HOPE, Miss. (AP) – Lowndes County authorities say a missing man’s wife and mother-in-law are in custody.

The jail’s booking deputy says 37-year-old Christina Martinez Vasquez and her mother, Lydia Martinez, remained in the jail Sunday.

WTVA-TV (http://bit.ly/1KsET2Q ) and the Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1fxsQ6I ) report that both were arrested last week in connection with the disappearance of 40-year-old Manuel Vasquez.

Vasquez’ mother reported him missing July 13. But others say he left June 24 for a retreat, without saying where it was.

Investigators believe Vasquez was killed in a house in New Hope, and that his body was burned in a container in the back yard. Authorities say bone fragments and ashes were found last week.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant says the bones and ashes have not been identified.
