LUMBERTON, Miss. (WJTV) – A Lumberton family is devastated after a 12-year-old girl was shot and killed Thursday night.

Lamar County Deputy Coroner Anna Miller said Jayla Sandifer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lumberton Police Chief Elsie Cowart said officers went to a home on Spring Street around 8:58 p.m., regarding shots fired. The girl was shot at her grandparent’s home, she said.

Police said everyone inside the home, including Jayla’s 16-year-old brother, was taken in for questioning. Police have not confirmed a shooter and they have not said if it was an accident at this time.

We’re told Jayla had an infectious smile and loved school. She was going to the 7th grade
