Mom of alleged Madison County Courthouse shooter shot over the weekend

WJTV is still learning details about the Madison County Courthouse Shooting.

Canton Police Chief Otha Brown said William Wells, the alleged shooter, was a former firefighter for the City of Canton.  Wells’ mother, Sherry Wells, was shot in the leg Saturday night when she was headed to work, Chief Brown said.

Police said Sherry Wells was driving and pulled up to a stop sign and someone fired several shots at her car.  She went to the police department and was then taken to the hospital.

There is no word on her condition.


 

UPDATE: WJTV has learned that the alleged shooter is 24-year-old William Wells.

Officials tell us that Wells and the victim, Kendrick Brown, got into an argument prior to Monday. Officials said Wells knew that Brown would be in court.

 


UPDATE: MADISON COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – One person is dead after a shooting at the Madison County Courthouse Monday morning.

Sheriff Randy Tucker said the shooter is in custody.

Coroner Alex Breeland tells us that Kendrick Brown died of a gunshot wound to the chest.

Sheriff Tucker said the shooter got out of his vehicle and shot the victim with a semi automatic handgun outside the courthouse in the courtyard. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

We’re told told by Brown’s family that he was a 37-year-old father of two. His mother said she was supposed to go to court with him, but he told her she didn’t have to come. She told WJTV that about five minutes after he left the house, Brown called her to say he had been shot. The victim’s mother said when she arrived at the courthouse, authorities told her he had died.

madison co courthouse shootingBrown, who was a defendant in a drug case, showed up to the courthouse with his attorney, Rusty Willard, for a status conference, according to District Attorney Michael Guest.

Deputies who were at the courthouse, arrested the suspect immediately after the shooting.

D.A. Guest said Brown was indicted on the charge of sale of a controlled substance and conspiracy to sale a controlled substance.

He said the victim was not cooperating with law enforcement and was expected to reject a plea deal at Monday’s status conference. Brown’s trial was set to begin later this month.

WJTV has confirmed that a shooting has occurred at the Madison County Courthouse in Canton.

We’re told a defendant was on his way to the courthouse and was shot outside.

Sources tell us that one person is dead and the shooter is in custody.

The victim’s name has not been released.

Authorities said the victim was indicted for sale of a controlled substance.

We’re working to get more information at this time.
