Ole Miss 17th, Mississippi State unranked in first AP Poll

WJTV – In the first college football AP Top 25 Poll for the upcoming season, Ole Miss is ranked and Mississippi State is not.

The Rebels come in at No. 17 while Mississippi State finished one spot out of the rankings, receiving the most votes out of unranked teams with 100.

Ole Miss is the fifth highest ranked team in the SEC, behind No. 3 Alabama, No. 6 Auburn, No. 9 Georgia and No. 14 LSU. Alabama, Auburn, LSU and No. 18 Arkansas make up the four ranked opponents on the Rebels’ 2015 schedule.

The Bulldogs will play the same four ranked opponents as Ole Miss, in addition to two others: the 17th ranked Rebels and No. 24 Missouri. That means the team has six ranked opponents on its schedule.

In 2014, the Rebels were No. 18 in the preseason poll. But after a 9-4 campaign that included an appearance in the Peach Bowl, Ole Miss finished at No. 17. Hugh Freeze’s squad went 3-3 in matchups against ranked opponents in 2014.

Meanwhile, Mississippi State begins 2015 as it did 2014: unranked. The Bulldogs finished at No. 11 in the final AP Top 25 after going 10-3 and appearing in the Orange Bowl. Dan Mullen’s team also went 3-3 in matchups against ranked teams in 2014.

The SEC has eight teams in the AP Top 25, the most of any conference in college football.
