YAZOO CITY, Miss. (WJTV) — Yazoo City officials said they are joining other cities across the nation that are taking down their flags that have the Confederate emblem in their designs.

They said they’ve signed a  resolution that ensures the immediate removal of the Mississippi State flag from all Yazoo City grounds and buildings. The measure prohibits the flag to be flown on any City of Yazoo City property or municipal facility as long as the Confederate emblem is on the state flag.

“The removal of this flag and symbol of divisiveness from city property and buildings shows that the Board of Mayor and Alderman of Yazoo and its citizens will not tolerate any acts of hatred or racism,” said Mayor Delaware. “We strongly and proudly stand in solidarity with municipalities across the country in encouraging and promoting unity, equality and tolerance for all people.”

Cities and states across the U.S. pushed to have their flags removed that contained the Confederate emblem after the Charleston church shooting that left nine people dead.

The shooter arrested in connection with the crime, Dylann Roof, was accused of using the Confederate battle flag as a symbol of hatred.
