Jackson, Miss. (WJTV) – Some people travel to the Mississippi State Fair for the rides, but others head to the fair for the unique food.
As WJTV’s Natay Holmes found out, some vendors traveled hundreds of miles to serve food at the fair.
Harlon’s BBQ came all the way from Texas.
“It’s our first year at this fair,” Candace Brooks of Harlon’s BBQ said.
They’ve been in business since 1977.
“We’re coming out of Nacogdoches, Texas. We have never been to Jackson, Mississippi for a fair, and they said this is one of the biggest fairs they ever had,” Brooks said.
Smokey Gals is another vendor at the fair. They didn’t have to travel far to set up shop at the State Fairgrounds.
“I live in Vicksburg, and my partner lives in Byram,” Leighanne Garner explained.
Garner says she and her business partner purchased a food trailer and began going to the fair three years ago.
“We decided to retire and have a little fun while we’re at it. We enjoy food. We enjoy people. It’s been a great opportunity for us,” Garner said.
She says Smokey Gals really made a big hit last year with their famous deep fried, beer-battered hamburger.
