Columbus police chief resigns

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WJTV) — Columbus Police Chief Tony Carleton is resigning, according to WCBI.

The announcement was made Monday.

Mayor Robert Smith said Chief Carleton is taking a teaching job in Alabama. The resignation is effective starting November 12.

Carleton was sworn in as police chief in June 2014.

Captain Fred Shelton is taking over chief duties until the city council appoints an interim chief.

The announcement comes after an officer was fired for being involved in a fatal shooting.
