Columbus police officer involved in fatal shooting fired

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WJTV) — A Columbus police officer involved in a fatal shooting has been fired.

Officials said Officer Canyon Boykin was let go on Friday.

Ricky Ball was shot and killed in an October 16 traffic stop.

Two other officers were placed on leave after the shooting.

A police officer involved in a fatal shooting earlier this month has been fired.

Mayor Robert Smith says Boykin was fired because he did not turn his body camera before the shooting. He said he also violated the city’s social media policy after the shooting and that his girlfriend was riding in the police car without permission.

The other two officers were suspended for 30 days without pay.

MBI is still investigating.
