RICHLAND, Miss. (WJTV) –The man who pleaded guilty in the deadly crash that killed a Belhaven football player last year has been sentenced to 25 years behind bars.
Madison and Rankin Counties’ District Attorney Michael Guest said Reginald Davis will serve his sentence in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
On Christmas Eve last year, Trey Rich was riding his bike home from working around 6:30 p.m. on Old Highway 49 in Richland when he was hit by a car.
Law enforcement officers on the scene said they smelled alcohol on Davis. His blood alcohol content level was at .139. The legal BAC is .08.
Davis admitted to consuming at least six beers before the accident.
Davis was also on probation at the time of the accident. He was convicted on two counts of automobile auto burglary in Rankin County in 2012.
“This is a tragic case in which a Belhaven student and football student was killed on Christmas Eve,” DA Guest said. ” The victim, Elbert Rich, was returning home from work at FedEx when he was struck by a drunk driver. This young man, who was working to put himself through college, was cut down by the selfish act of Davis driving drunk.”
