Thanksgiving Food: Deadly For Pets

JACKSON, Miss. – For North State Animal Hospital, Black Friday is one of the busiest days of the year.

That’s because people give pets Thanksgiving food, which could mean a trip to the vet the very next day.

For 40 years Dr. Adrian Whittington has been treating animals, he says now is when pets start to roll in after nibbling on table food.

“It’s only natural that we want to get those babies some of the things that we cooked for the other loved ones…in the south food equals love,” Whittington explained.

Be aware, that you could be doing your dog more harm than good

“Ham is one of those things that we see babies come in and they are very, very sick,” Whittington said.

In most cases pets that are sick after eating pork can be treated with injectable medicine, but there are other foods that can be deadly.

“We see the tragic things, we see the dog that gets a bone in the intestinal track, because there is a gastric obstruction–and of course that requires surgery,” Whittington said.

The best thing to do is to stick to pet food, even if your dog begs you for what’s on your plate.
