BUFFALO,N.Y. (WIVB) – Kim Zielkiewicz called it one of the easiest decisions she had ever made.
The East Aurora mail carrier donated one of her kidneys to a man she had never met, and she has no regrets. “I would do it all over again to see the hope and happiness in peoples eyes after I woke up from surgery the look of just being proud of me, my family.”
The surgery took place on November 30, at ECMC, where the recipient, Bob Parczewski works as a nurse in the psychiatric unit. “They told me as soon as they put the kidney in, it connected. It started pumping right away like it was meant to be there. I mean she saved my life. How do you thank somebody for that?”
It wasn’t until days after the surgery that Kim was finally ready to meet Bob in the hospital. “When I saw him his face lit up like a Christmas tree. So when I actually finally got that moment to give him a hug, you can’t even describe it. It was very powerful. I mean I could feel his heartbeat just standing next to him.”
Bob is recovering at his home and expects to miss about three months of work. “I’m gonna change the sign on the back of my truck from ‘I need a kidney” to “I got my kidney”, and under that I’m probably gonna put something to the effect of ‘I believe in miracles, and I believe in angles because I know one. So good things do happen and there are a lot of good people out there, so believe and trust.”
Kim says she still has lower back pain and gets tired easily. she is expected to miss several more weeks of work at the Post Office, but she wants to thank all of those who donated to a GoFundMe page that friends of her set up. She especially wants to thank whoever it is who anonymously paid her January rent.
