One child dead: MEMA shares damage from severe weather across Mississippi

PEARL, Miss. (WJTV)  – One child is dead in Holly Springs after a tornado hits Highway 7 according to our sister CBS affiliate WREG.

That is one of many reports made to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) about the severe weather and tornadoes that north Mississippi on Wednesday.

The following counties have been submitted damage reports:

Benton County lists damaged cars on Mississippi Highway 5 near Ashland.  MS Highway 5 is closed at this time.

Coahoma County lists damage to homes and the airport near Clarksdale. One injury has been reported.

Marshall County lists homes damaged, powerlines are down near Mississippi Highway 4 and Mississippi Highway 7 near Holly Springs. MS Highway7 is closed at this time. Search and rescue are in progress.

At least three injuries are being reported, search and rescue are being conducted and damage assessments are being done.

Panola County lists homes damaged near Sardis and two injuries have been reported. Mississippi Highway 315 between Sledge and Sardis is blocked due to crews clearing storm debris.

Quitman County lists damage to homes

Tippah County lists damage near Brownsville community.

MEMA is assisting emergency managers in those counties.

The State Emergency Operations Center is partially activated with certain agencies to assist counties.

The National Weather Service says the severe threat is ongoing and residents are asked to remain aware.
