CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Officials have confirmed a tractor-trailer has gone overboard at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.
According to officials, it happened southbound at mile post 14, shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Tom Anderson with Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel confirms the driver is alive and was pulled out of the water by Virginia Beach Marine Patrol at 3:55 p.m.
The driver is on his way to the hospital. The water temperature at the time of the accident was 49.1 degrees.
U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Commander Krystyn Pecora said a rescue crew out of Cape Charles assisted with the situation.
The south right lane is closed.
