HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WJTV) — University of Southern Mississippi officials shutdown several campus roads because of a sinkhole.
USM Police said they are assessing the hole. It’s in the parking lot between Oseola McCarty Hall and Scianna Hall.
The hole was filled with sewage, debris, and water because a pipe collapsed.
The city has since pumped out that hole; sewage was pumped into another line which allowed officials to assess the hole.
The hole is about three to four feet in diameter and possibly four to five feet deep.
USM is now in the process of making repairs along with the city of Hattiesburg. The hole did not extend into the street but the McCarty Hall parking lot is closed and will probably remain closed for the next week and a half.
Scianna Hall will remain closed until crews finish their assessment of the damage. They also closed Eagle Walk Drive.
Road blocks have been set up from the West Fourth Street entrance to the South End of M.M. Roberts Stadium and a portion of Ray Guy Way between the Jim and Thomas Duff Athletic Center and Joe P. Park Practice Field.
So far, no damage has been reported.
