JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Mississippi legislators could resolve two election challenges soon.
Attorneys made closing arguments Friday to House and Senate committees. Those groups are reviewing the cases and plan to make recommendations to the full House and Senate next week.
The District 79 House race in Smith and Jasper counties ended in a tie between Democratic Rep. Bo Eaton of Taylorsville and Republican challenger Mark Tullos of Raleigh. Eaton won a tiebreaker by drawing straws, but Tullos says the election never should have been tied because he believes some votes were improperly counted.
The District 37 Senate race was in Adams, Amite, Franklin and Pike counties. Democratic former Sen. Bob Dearing defeated incumbent Republican Sen. Melanie Sojourner by 64 votes, but she says the election wasn’t run fairly. Both are from Natchez.
