National Signing Day 2016: Mississippi State

WJTV – Two defensive linemen highlight Dan Mullen’s 2016 recruiting class.

Five-star Noxubee County defensive end Jeffery Simmons and four-star Starkville defensive tackle Kobe Jones both signed with the Bulldogs on National Signing Day to round out an 18-player class. You can hear from them both on their decisions in the video below.

Ten of those signees are from Mississippi. That means eight out-of-state athletes are coming to Starkville. Below is a map showing where all of the recruits are coming from, with the markers placed on where they went to high school. If you click on each marker, the recruit’s information will pop up.

The star breakdown for the class looks like this:

Five-Star Signees: 1

Four-Star Signees: 2

Three-Star Signees: 15

As a whole, the class is ranked among the top 40 across four major recruiting sites but overall, the Bulldogs are down in those rankings compared to last year:

247Sports: 31 (2015: 18)

ESPN: 33 (2015: 16)

Scout: 35 (2015: 19)

Rivals: 36 (2015: 16)

That drop in ranking can partly be attributed to a decrease in four-star signees. Using ratings from 247Sports, the 2015 class contained seven while this year’s class has two.

But with the signing of Simmons, the Bulldogs have their first five-star signee since Chris Jones in 2013.
