National Signing Day 2016: Southern Miss

WJTV – There were probably many in the Golden Eagles’ 2016 recruiting class that didn’t expect Todd Monken to not be their coach.

But 18 incoming recruits will now play for Jay Hopson as Southern Miss finalized its 2016 recruiting class. The full class is listed below (ratings courtesy of 247Sports.com):

Eleven players from the class hail from Mississippi. That means seven out-of-state players are coming to Hattiesburg. Below is a map showing where all of the recruits are coming from, with the markers placed on where they went to high school or junior college. If you click on each marker, the recruit’s information will pop up.

The star breakdown for the class looks like this:

Three-Star Signees: 9

Two-Star Signees: 9

Pisgah’s T.J. McGinnis is one of those two-star recruits. The former Dragon stayed with his USM commitment and signed with the program to play for Hopson. In the video at the top of the page, McGinnis said Hopson recruited him while he was at Alcorn State and that helped convince McGinnis to stay a Golden Eagle.

Hopson had also recruited Germantown offensive lineman Arvin Fletcher to Alcorn State too. But once Hopson left for Hattiesburg, he wanted Fletcher to come with him.

Fletcher also signed with East Mississippi Community College.

Welcome MS/AL All-Star, MAC Class 5A 1st Team, and All-USA MS 2nd Team OL/T, Arvin Fletcher, to the #FAM1LY! #PR1DE

Hopson also had the ear of Canton’s Demarrio Smith. Smith said he committed to Hopson at Alcorn but then the coach called him when he went to Southern Miss, bringing Smith to the Golden Eagles.
