JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) — You might have heard it the catchy Bruno Mars hit “Uptown Funk”.
But did you know there was a local woman connected to a certain line in that song? And get this, She is a Grammy nominee.
Keyone Starr makes music of her own. One of her new songs “I can’t lose” is a fitting title for a woman who says a chance encounter with Bruno Mars led to putting her hometown in his track.
Starr says it started out as a joke and ended up being one of the most noted lines.
“I wasn’t like literally there when they inserted it in the song (but did you know it was for you?) After of course, I was like really Jackson, Mississippi in this song. They were like again any time you get to say Jackson, Mississippi in a song you have to say it just like that.”
Starr tells us she was discovered at Jackson State University when producers were looking for soulful singers.
Starr is nominated for best pop vocal album in the 58th Grammy Awards.
The Grammys will air Monday night at 7 p.m. on WJTV 12.
