BLANCO, Texas (KXAN) — An Austin police bomb squad has been sent to a school in Blanco after authorities found a possible explosive device at the school. All students have been safely evacuated to the elementary school gym.
Officials at the scene have analyzed photos of the suspicious device and have put in place a 200-foot evacuation perimeter around the school. Rocky Road is closed at that location.
According to the Blanco Independent School District, it was reported to school officials at Blanco Middle School that a student brought an explosive device to school. After investigating, the school did find a suspicious item and the Austin Police Department’s Bomb Squad was called in to assist.
The school building has been evacuated and local law enforcement and fire department personnel are now assessing the situation. Since authorities believe this situation won’t be resolved until after 4 p.m., middle school students have been evacuated to the elementary school gym, according to a 2:20 p.m. update. The district is currently releasing students to their parents at the entrance to the elementary school gym on Mesquite Street.
Students who ride the bus home will board their bus at the elementary campus and be transported home as usual, the update continued. Parents who pick up their children after school can pick up their child at the elementary school gym, and students who walk home will be released from the same gym at 3:25 p.m.
