JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) — Authorities are investigating a shooting were an alleged burglar was killed by a Fort Hill Drive homeowner.
They said they believe the man who was shot and killed is Warren County jail escapee Rafael McCloud.
Police said they responded to a burglary call around 7 a.m. They said the burglar took a man, his wife, and a 5-year-old child hostage. Around 4 a.m., the man and his son were going into the garage getting ready to leave when they were approached by a man with a knife, according to police.
The burglar forced them back into the house. The homeowner was bound and forced into the bathroom with his son and wife. The man fought with the suspect and he was stabbed during the struggle. Police said his wife managed to get away to grab a gun from inside the home and shoot McCloud.
Police said she helped free her husband and he fired several more shots at McCloud. The family then ran outside and stopped someone driving by and they called 911.
The coroner pronounced McCloud dead at the scene. Police said he was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the bathtub.
He escaped the Warren County Jail on March 2 and was on the run ever since. McCloud was indicted for the murder of Sharen Wilson last year. Wilson was killed on June 28, 2015. He was charged with murder, rape, burglary, arson, auto theft and felon in possession of a firearm.
