JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) — Senate Highways and Transportation Committee Chairman Senator Willie Simmons plans to present a new bill that would increase Mississippi’s gas tax.
The money gathered would be used for highway and bridge repairs.
“Hopefully we will send a message to the house of representatives that we are in support of trying to find a ways and means of funding highways and infrastructure. our bridges are in such bad shape,” she said. “Our highways are in such bad shape and with the flooding that occurred they are going to get worse.”
To increase any tax, you must have a 3/5 majority in the House and Senate.
The last time lawmakers approved a major increase in funding for transportation repairs was in 1987.
