City of Jackson explains the downfalls of water theft

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – The city of Jackson’s Department of Public Works is issuing a public service announcement regarding water thefts

Shield Byrd, a spokeswoman with the city of Jackson, says water theft is stealing water through unmetered consumption which means it’s straight from the pipe, non-registered meters without an active service agreement or unauthorized fire hydrant use.

This type of theft is to avoid payment; which in turn shifts undue costs to other people.

The city says it causes a loss of revenue and hampers the city’s ability to adequately repair water leaks and replace old pipes.

You may remember back in December 2015. Some employees with the city’s water and wastewater division were fired after an ongoing probe of water theft.

The city of Jackson says it found out about places with illegal water installations.
