City of Jackson leaders asking residents involved in water thefts to stop

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) — The City of Jackson leaders are urging residents not to steal water.

They define water theft as the act of stealing water through unmetered consumption or non-registered meters without an active service agreement. Officials said water is stolen through straight line pipes, unauthorized fire hydrant usage, non-registered meters, or unauthorized fire service usage.

They said when people steal, prices go up for everyone in the community with additional repair, investigation, and administrative costs.

Jackson officials said it is the consumer’s responsibility to ensure an active service agreement is in place. If renting, residents should be certain that the utilities are covered in the rental agreement or if not, apply for a service agreement. Failure to do so could result in criminal charges.

To report water theft, meter tampering and/or meter vandalism or anyone attempting to extort payment for utility services, please call 601-960-2091 or email
