RIDGELAND, Miss. (WJTV) – Are you looking for a little outdoor fun and fitness on Saturday, April 2, 2016?
Lakeshore Park at The Rez is the place to be for this year’s “Racin’ for the Seed”.
It’s one of the largest fundraisers of the year for the Mustard Seed.
Mustard Seed’s mission is to meet the spiritual, physical, emotional, and intellectual needs of adults with developmental disabilities.
It’s been doing just that since 1981.
At least 10 Seedsters will complete this year’s “Racin’ for the Seed” 5K.
Sara Simonson is training hard.
She says, “We walk every day. We do 12 laps around the track. We’re doing good on this 5K.”
Saturday, April 2, they’ll test their paces along with several hundred other runners.
Lakeshore Park will provide a picturesque backdrop for a 5K and duathlon.
Mustard Seed Executive Director Del Harrington explains the nuances of the duathlon, “A duathlon is actually a 5K and then you hop on a bicycle, and you do 14.7 miles, and you come back and you follow that with a 1-mile run or walk.”
You can enter as an individual or part of a team.
More than 400 people raced last year.
Del remembers, “In the last 2 years, we’ve raised over $60,000 for our ongoing ministry, and, of course, we plan to just take that to the next this year.”
And why not?
Plenty of family-friendly activities are also in the works including a sports obstacle course, food vendors and live music.
Del advises, “Bring the family. Let them cheer you on. Meet some of our Seedsters, all while supporting the ministry of the Mustard Seed.”
Sarah concludes, “I like to visit my friends and talk to my friends and have fun with my friends.”

Inky the Clown is also going to be on hand to entertain the kids.
Competitors also get a t-shirt with a colorful design created by the Seedsters.
