We’re told it was an undercover narcotics operation that took a turn for the worse when shots were fired between the officer and the suspect.  The motorcycle that the suspect tried to ride in his escape attempt is still at the crime scene.

The officer went into surgery early this morning at USA Medical Center to have a portion of his small intestine removed after taking a bullet to each leg and his lower abdomen.

             STORY HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Officer went into surgery to have portion of small intestine removed after taking bullets to each leg, lower abdomen
  • Shooting was part of a reported narcotics bust, when the suspect and the officer exchanged gunfire

Mobile Police say the officer shot is a member of MCSENT — Mobile County Street Enforcement Narcotics Team.  Police and News 5 are not releasing the man’s identity because the officer’s family has not been fully notified.

MCSENT is Mobile County’s top law enforcement agency when it comes to keeping drugs off the street. Most of the team’s field members are undercover officers who routinely buy or sell narcotics in sting operations.

The gas station is not in Mobile’s jurisdiction, but according to the police department, the MCSENT unit has different jurisdiction rules since some deputies with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office work on this undercover team.
