RICHLAND, Miss. (WJTV) –Authorities are investigating an apparent dust explosion that happened at a Richland plant.
According to Battalion Chief Brandon Weems of the Richland Fire Department, they went to International Paper on Carrier Boulevard around 12.30 a.m.
He said they had to put out a small fire that sparked during the dust explosion.
Weems said the explosion caused some of the walls inside the plant to be blown out.
It also caused the hazardous material caustic soda to leak. Officials said they called the United States Environmental Services to the scene to help clean up the spill.
Around 6 a.m., Weems said another fire sparked on the roof. They were able to put out the flames.
No one was injured.
At this time, authorities are not sure what caused the explosion. Weems said the plant uses paper to make boxes and other products.
The investigation is ongoing.
