CLINTON, Miss. (WJTV) — A Bolton man is arrested for trying to sell a stolen truck on Craigslist, according to Clinton Police.
Authorities said 36-year-old Marrio Terrell Swanagan is charged with receiving stolen property and possession of marijuana while operating a vehicle.
Police said a Ford F-150 was stolen from a car wash in South Jackson in April. Officers received a tip that someone was trying to sell the stolen truck on Craigslist. Clinton Police said they decided to conduct an undercover operation.
Police discovered that VIN number on the vehicle matched the truck that was stolen from Jackson. Detectives also determined that the signatures on the original title of the vehicle had been forged by the suspect to indicate his purchase of the truck.
Swanagan was arrested in connection with this crime.
Clinton Police said the truck has been returned to its owner.
Clinton Police are reminding shoppers to be careful when making online purchases.
“Anyone planning to make a purchase from a private individual, from an ad on the internet, newspaper or other publication should check the vehicle and documents very carefully,” stated Chief Ford Hayman. “Make sure that the title is an original and that the VIN matches the one on the title.”
Below are some safety tips that were given by Clinton Police:
- Complete Craigslist and other online transactions at a well-lit and visible location.
- Residents can use the Clinton Police Department lobby at 305 Monroe Street to complete transactions. By utilizing the Police Station, residents can immediately have the VIN number of the vehicle purchase run for authenticity.
- The presence of officers will act as a deterrent to scammers.
