Justices uphold conviction in 2008 Oktibbeha County slaying

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The Mississippi Supreme Court has upheld the capital murder conviction of an Oktibbeha County man found guilty of fatally shooting his former girlfriend.

In a ruling Thursday, justices also upheld the life-without-parole sentence of 57-year-old Archie Quinn, who’s in the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman.

He was convicted in 2014 in the 2008 slaying of 35-year-old Stacy Gray.

Prosecutors say Quinn shot Gray to death after breaking into the Starkville home she shared with her boyfriend, Terry Johnson. Quinn shot and wounded Johnson before Johnson managed to escape.

Prosecutors say deputies were called to the home after receiving a report of gunshots. The deputies came upon Quinn who got out of his vehicle, walked to the back of it and shot himself in the head. Quinn recovered from the wound.
