JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) — A Jackson neighborhood has a new look after the Jackson Medical Mall helped bring in a new housing complex.
City and state leaders attended a ribbon cutting ceremony for East Village Estates Thursday morning.
Primus Wheeler of the Medical Mall said the development has been in the works for more than 10 years.
“You have to think about what we found when we came here,” Wheeler said. “It looked like someone had dropped a bomb in here. Many of the homes were already burned out and just an eyesore.”
Wheeler said they tore down 80 properties that were bought or donated tot he mall for the development. Former Gov. William Winter also attended the ceremony.
“We’ve come a long way from those dark old days,” he said. “Jackson is a much better place now than when I moved here 60 years ago.”
The East Village Estates is an affordable housing complex for people with an income of $36,000 or less. Residents will live in the homes for some years; then they will become eligible to purchase them.
There are 44 units with two stories and three bedrooms.
