50th Anniversary of The March Against Fear

CANTON, Miss. (WJTV) — Dozens of people were in Canton to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the March Against Fear.

Those who joined the crusade will be honored.

Fifty years ago, Civil Rights Icon James Meredith Walked from Memphis to Jackson to challenge fear and get African Americans to vote. Eventually, thousands joined in on the march. Marchers set up tents to rest at McNeal Elementary, but state troopers wouldn’t allow it. They threw tear gas and injured many.

Thursday, a march started at 9 a.m. at Southern Hill Baptist Church. A Freedom Trail Marker will also be unveiled. Civil Rights Icon James Meredith is expected to speak at the commemorative program at 6 p.m.
