Man drowns in lake while grabbling for fish

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) – A man has died at a lake near Oxford while grabbling for catfish.

The Oxford Eagle ( reports that 30-year-old Wesley Loptien died Saturday at Sardis Lake after going into the water to catch the fish with his hands.

Greg Raimondo of the Vicksburg District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says a friend noticed that Loptien had been underwater longer than usual and went in to look for him. He eventually found Loptien entangled in a root ball. The friend was able to free Loptien, but it was too late.

Lafayette County Coroner Rocky Kennedy says Loptien was pronounced dead at the lake.

Loptien’s friend, Jason Foster, says Loptien had been grabbling since he was about 17 years old. Loptien was using respirators when he went underwater.
