RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) — An expansion project in Rankin County on Highway 471 is one step closer to completion.
The project has bee going on since February of last year. The road work, cones and detours have been a hassle for drivers, but now there’s a little relief for them.
Drivers now have the green light to go through parts of Highway 47.
Brandie Keller said she was surprised by the transformation.
“This morning when I came in, it was still the old road and when i left to go to lunch, it was open,” she said. “It just looked like a whole new world to me.”
For people like Larry Adams, these roads are heavily traveled.
“It was congested with a lot of people in and out and slow traffic, but now that it has opened up, it is a lot better.”
Two lanes have opened up to drivers on the railroad overpass. With new pavement and updated traffic lights you can tell things are changing. You can even see the fresh concrete on the new bridge over Interstate 20.
Eventurally the road will expand to four lanes. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
