RICHLAND, Miss. (WJTV) — Richland Police said the man who ran from a Monday afternoon traffic stop is no longer in their custody.
Richland Police Chief Russel James said 55-year-old Frank Sumerall had been released on his own recognizance for misdemeanor charges. His case will go before the grand jury on the felony charges.
Police accused Sumerall of shoplifting from the Dollar General on Carlie Drive. They said officers tried to pull him over on Scarbrough Street, but he refused to stop. They said he got onto Highway 49 heading north to get onto I-20 West. Richland Police said that’s when their officers stopped the pursuit because of heavy traffic concerns.
Sumerall crashed the silver Nissan Sentra that he was driving near the State Street exit. They said he got out of the car and started to run away from the scene on foot. Richland officers took him into to custody a short time later.
Sumerall was charged with shoplifting, felony feeling and eluding, resisting arrest, and traffic violations.
