Jackson, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson Police say a man is in the hospital after a fight with officers around 1 a.m. Monday.

We’re told it all started with a checkpoint on Prentiss Street in Jackson. Police say Lexus Russell, 24, failed to go through the traffic stop. When officers ran the car’s information, they noticed the 2016 white Dodge Charger was reported stolen.

Commander Tyree Jones with the Jackson Police Department tells us officers began searching for the suspect and the car.

They found the car near the intersection of Eastview St. and Central St. When the suspect saw police near that location, we’re told he crashed into an embankment and took off running.

Officers caught up with Russell. After a scuffle with officers, he was taken into custody.

We’re told the 24-year-old suspect did have minor injuries. Emergency officials took Russell to the University of Mississippi Medical Center to be treated.

Police say the car Russell was driving was carjacked in July near McDowell Road and Gallatin Street. He will face charges of auto theft and armed robbery from that incident.
