BRANDON, Miss. (WJTV) – A budget cut of more than $3,000,000 forces the Mississippi Forestry Commission to lay off 25 employees, four of which are state arson investigators.
Brandon Fire Chief Terry Wages is remaining optimistic about the way his department will deal with taking on fire investigations that were previously lead by the state forestry commission.
He says he hasn’t been notified by the forestry commission about the arson investigator layoffs.
But he has spoken with State Fire Marshal and Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney about how the insurance department will help.
“I can speak on behalf of Brandon. We intend to work with them as best we can. Their expertise will be brought in, in conjunction with our expertise; we’ll be sure to make sure these fires get investigated,” said Chief Wages.
Chaney said in a statement yesterday that his department could perform the investigations when called on, until February 2017.
