Flash Flood Emergency in several counties in Southwest Mississippi

NWS calling it "a particularly dangerous situation"

(WJTV) — There are still some roadways and communities dealing with flooding Friday evening.

Currently, flooding has impacted the following roads in South Mississippi:

Amite County

  • Hwy 569 from Berwick Castle Road to the Louisiana State Line.

 Pike County

  • Hwy 575 between SR 48 and Osyka Progress Road.             

Wilkinson County

  • Hwy 563 at the Buffalo River Bridge.

(WJTV) –The Mississippi Department of Transportation is says several roads in different counties are flooding from Friday morning rain.

Below is an update listed of the affected areas.

Amite County:

  • Hwy 24 between Centerville and Gloster.
  • Hwy 24 between Gloster and Liberty.
  • Hwy 48 between Liberty and Centerville.

Pike County:

  • Hwy 575 between SR 48 and Osyka Progress Road.

Wilkinson County:

  • Hwy 33 between Centerville and the Louisiana State Line.

There is also some flooding in Copiah County.

In addition to those streets in Mississippi, The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is reporting that both directions of I-55 is closed between mile marker 52 and 56 due to flooding.

UPDATE: 08/12/2016 8:09amCDT Several roads are flooded in Pike County, Mississippi. At least five people have been rescued in Osyka alone.

PIKE COUNTY, Mississippi (WJTV) – The Deputy Director of the Emergency Management Association in Pike County, Carlene Statham, says they have rescued someone who was trapped in a car in Osyka.  Four others were rescued from two homes affected by flooding there as well.

Boat teams from McComb are assisting with rescues near the Progress and Osyka.

Other agencies aiding with rescues include:

  • McComb Fire Department
  • Osyka Volunteer Fire Department
  • Progress Volunteer Fire Department
  • Sunny Hill Volunteer Fire Department

A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for Pike County in Southern Mississippi effective until 9:15am CDT today.

Emergency management officials are reporting heavy rain and flooding in and around Osyka.

The National Weather Service (NWS) says they have had more than six inches of rain, causing flash flooding throughout the area.

The NWS says this is a flash flood emergency for Osyka, and calls it “a particularly dangerous situation.”

Residents in affected areas are being told to seek higher ground.  Those areas include parts of Magnolia, Osyka, and McComb Airport.
