Former Hinds County Deputy arrested for drugs

HINDS COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – A Hinds County Deputy was arrested Wednesday for possession of a controlled substance.

Former Deputy Douglas J. Nelson is charged with possession of controlled substance and conspiracy to possession of controlled substance, according to Hinds County Sheriff Victor Mason.

The former deputy worked in the warrants division of the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office. Nelson was arrested on duty in Byram and was fired immediately.

The Attorney General’s Office said Nelson is accused of possessing 30 dosage  units of Oxycodone. If convicted, the defendant faces a maximum of five years in prison for conspiracy, 20 years for possession of a controlled substance and a total of $500,000 in fines.

The Hinds County Sheriff’s Office partnered with Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Attorney General’s office to make this arrest.

Authorities are asking  anyone with information concerning Nelson that would help their investigation to come forward.
