Resident fatally shoots alleged burglar on MLK Drive in Jackson


UPDATE: 09/14/2016 11:45am  Jackson Police say a resident shot and killed an alleged burglar on Martin Luther King Drive Wednesday morning.

Police said they received the call around 10:14 a.m.

“I think it was a terrible decision made by the part of the deceased and it cost him his life,” Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance said. “I have a lot of sympathy for the occupant that fired the shot because I have spoken to him, and he is very distraught, but he was put in a position where he had to defend his home.”

We are told that the alleged burglar died a the scene. He was shot in the chest with a shotgun. JPD said the alleged burglar tried to break into the home through a sliding glass door.

“I think they (criminals) should receive the fact that some people are not going to tolerate this and that they are going to defend their home and it is their right to do so. Unwanted intruders are not welcome in the consequences can be deadly,” Chief Vance said.

JPD says the resident is shaken up about what happened. He is not facing any charges.

UPDATE: 09/14/2016 10:37am  Jackson Police are confirming that an alleged burglar has been fatally shot by a resident of the home.

JACKSON, Mississippi (WJTV) – Police are on the scene of an apparent shooting in Jackson, Mississippi.

Multiple law enforcement personnel have arrived on the scene.  WJTV’s Terrance Friday is there.  Once WJTV can confirm details with police we will provide the latest update on Facebook live.

The incident happened on MLK Drive between Watson and Ash Streets.
